ebay & Beyond: Basics To Business Podcasts Reviewed By AuctionWally

January 30, 2009 · Filed Under Uncategorized · Comment

While prying open my sleepy eyes this morning I was greeted by a Direct Message (DM) from my good friend Walt Kolenda aka AuctionWally. As I was downing my morning coffee I about sprayed my computer screen with said coffee when I read the link that Wally had sent me! Imagine my total surprise when I began reading Wally’s review of my weekly live internet radio program ebay & Beyond: Basics To Business (also available as a podcast on Talkshoe and iTunes).

Walt has been a contributor/writer for Examiner.com for some time and recently has been charged with reviewing podcasts. I am totally floored that he would chose our program to be one of the first podcasts he reviewed.

Wally’s article is glowing and complimentary! Thanks so much Walt for the great review and exposure. As we approach our second anniversary show next week, I truly appreciate the attention and review by one of my peers.

eBay To Make PayPal Preferred Payment Method, No More Cash, Checks or MO’s

We Knew This Was Coming

At midnight last night eBay made public it’s much anticipated site changes. Midnight??? Yep, eBay briefed a select group of bloggers and media outlets yesterday in their San Jose campus and via telephone and email regarding the impending changes. Those that were given the sneak preview were admonished not to post or publish anything until 12 midnight ET. eBay itself did not post the changes until 10:04 AM ET on it’s Announcements Page.

There are many significant changes in this announcement, but the one that really upsets my applecart is the move to only allow credit card payments. Now we all know that eBay tried unsuccessfully to implement PayPal only in Austrailia.

As this effort failed, and at the time eBay professed it was not going to try to move this to the US site, sure enough they held true to their word,,, sort of.

Electronic Check-Out Coming In Late October

According to the announcement, beginning in late October, cash, checks and money orders will NO LONGER be accepted on eBay.com with a few exceptions. eBay has decided that we as business owners no longer can chose how we are paid if we want to continue to use eBay as a marketing venue. To be fair, the vast majority of ecommerce sites do not accept “paper” payments.

While the vast majority of transactions are paid electronically, I still feel that PayPal is being stuffed down my throat as the other current options allowed are ProPay??? (I am still trying to find out more about ProPay, who owns them etc) or establish a merchant account.

While this policy change does not make PayPal the only accepted way to buy on eBay, it certainly is a move in that direction.

Auction Floor Announces Full Integration With OnlineAuction.com

eBay Appears to Continue to Move Away From Auctions

As eBay continues on what many consider to the be a move away from auctions both in the online and live format, many live auctioneers were left looking for a venue to integrate into their auctions so they could include online bidders. eBay announced in April that it would discontinue it’s live auctions.

Since 2006 eBay has been putting emphasis on fixed price selling and making changes to the site that seem to disadvantage auction sellers. According to eBay, buyers are looking for quicker transactions.

Summer is here….

Looks like summer is here and boy what a season, everything is growing and getting green. I know that alot of you out there will be going on vactions, weekend trips, etc.

So take this as a reminder from Sparky and the ebay & Beyond gang, list your auctions so that they end when your home, not on the road so that you’ll be able to take care of your customer with emails, invoices, shipping in a timely maner.

Customer service is what will help build your business better than most anything else.

Keep your buyers happy and they will return time and time again.

What Did You Learn From the OLA Rummage Sale?

May 11, 2008 · Filed Under Uncategorized · 1 Comment

You Know this blog is supposed to be about my side of the mic, so I hope I can tell my side and not bore you to much.

The OLA Rummage Sale has come to an end. Some wonder what has the OLA Rummage Sale done for me! From my point of view  a lot.

I will admit I’m not a seller and don’t claim to be one, so many may just blow this off, I hope not.

The biggest winner from the auction was the person or persons who participate in the first place.

They came and stumbled trying to list on a new platform for them, and it seemed there was just a ton of help for them when they fell down and just couldn’t seem to get it right. Wow to me that’s a plus..Getting to know each other.

Then there’s the new buyers that came or did I miss that someone sold something?

New people, and what do you do when you find something good ? You get what you can, then tell another person and so forth. Don’t you think they told others of the bargains on OLA? More exposure thats a plus.

I think some of OLA’s staff came to know all of us a little better and how strong we are…. and will be there as they have been to pick us up when we stumble.

Remember if I’m right this place is going to get big. Kinda nice to know the folks that run the place when you need to talk to them. Or even have someone to talk with.

When things are small and time is not to busy, lets build on what we have learned, not on what we don’t have.
